Defining a youth

Jump to: navigation, search

The definition of a youth varies from country to country. Even in one country, a youth may be defined differently amongst various communities. Generally, a youth is a male or female who is in a stage of life between childhood and adulthood. Development organisations have different definitions of a youth. The UN, for instance, define youth as people aged between 15 and 25 while the Commonwealth define youth as those aged between 15 and 29.

Most countries in Africa define youth as those aged between 18 and 35, guided by the African Youth Charter. Asian countries countries tend to have a higher age bracket for youth, as high as 40.

Youth can also be sociologically defined. For instance, in some societies, anyone married, even at age 13 is an adult, and anyone single even at 40 is a youth. Similarly, youth hood and adulthood may also be determined by whether one has children or not

Thanks for your elaborative justification on youth definition, I totally agree with. The definition of youth varies among countries worldwide because besides biology, social and cultural factors as well as environmental factors determine how someone is treated “youth “. In Nepal it stretches the definition of youth as people from 16-40 years old, with a broader spectrum the United Nations defines youth as 16-24 years in age.
