One of the things women and their families require is easy access to the birthing unit. Many a baby has been born in a car park, so there needs to be quick and easy access to midwives and appropriate equipment. It is also important that women and families are not required to make their way through long expanses of hospital corridors which re-reinforces the concept that women are 'sick'.
