The processor and task handling

The processor is the brain of the computer. Among the tasks performed by the processor are:

  • Fetching programs or data from backing store
  • Loading and linking the program instructions to the datasets
  • Interpretation of instructions
  • Computations and storage or transmission of results to main memory or backing stores etc.

These activities are carried out with the assistance of the operating system installed on the computer that acts as the coordinator of all the operations carried out by the computer.
