Lesson Title: The Last Spin by Evan Hunter (Ed McBain)This lesson is based on The Last Spin by Evan Hunter, a story about teenage street gangs and how they solve problems. This lesson is designed for small group work using internet resources via a webquest by Dr. Nellie Deutsch and structured assignments. The students working in teams of four, will play the roles of reporters for a national teen magazine. Their editor has asked the team to find out why a teenager called Danny committed suicide. Their mission is to cover the story from four angles. The lesson includes a student handout and worksheet.
Students will learn about street gangs and answer the following questions:
- What are teenage street gangs?
- How do street gangs solve their problems?
- What are some Violent and non-violent ways of solving problems?
- How can schools help?
- How can parents help?
- How can friends help?
The lesson is designed to support team work, software productivity tools and reporting skills.
