Preknowledge, Objectives and Competencies
|
In this unit we will concentrate on the neural crest, a specific group of cells that arise from the outer edges of the neural plate and migrate to form the peripheral nervous system and other tissue types. Because of their competence to form such a variety of tissue types, they are sometimes referred to as 'the fourth germ layer'. We will examine what the processes are that give rise to the neural crest, their migratory paths, and the signals that contribute to their final fate. |
At the end of this unit you should be able to:

Activities and Reading Material
During class, we will look at the process by which the neural crest cells are formed. Using the diagrams provided we will examine the migration paths of the different populations of neural crest cells and how they relate to their final fate. We will identify the signalling mechanisms that guide and determine the final differentiation of neural crest cells into their derivatives. We will also examine the experimental approaches that have allowed the study of neural crest differentiation.
