Usage

{{Painting}} supersedes {{Information}} for the description of images of pictural art (paintings, and by extension: frescoes, pencils, engravings, stained glass, etc.).

Brief syntax description

Artist	Author of the picture, or his {{Creator:Artist Name}} tag. Please create new {{Creator:Artist Name}} tags if necessary, especially for {{PD-old}} works.
Title	Title of the picture, such as: {{en|''The Title of the Picture''.}} {{en|Untitled, known as ''A Common Title'' or ''Another Known Title''.}} When possible, boldface the original-language title (see example below). Multilingual tags available: {{Self-portrait}}.
Year	Year(s) of production, please use: 1234 or 1234–1239 - for simple dates {{other date}} - for all other dates
Technique	Pictural technique used, such as: {{Technique}} {{Oil on canvas}} <— if a multilingual Technique tag exists {{en|Technique on support}} <— when no tag exists
Dimensions	Width and height of the picture in a {{Size}} converter, such as: {{Size|cm|76.7|83.5}} <— gives Template:Size or {{Size|in|30.2|32.87}} <— gives Template:Size, if sizes are given in inches Avoid using Language templates
Gallery	Gallery/museum owning the piece (else use {{Private collection}}), such as: {{Rijksmuseum}} <— if a multilingual Gallery tag exists [[Musée du Louvre]] <— else, native gallery name (or its romanized version) For lost pieces: "Stolen from (gallery) in (date)", "Lost by fire from (gallery) in (date)", or similar.
Location	City, Country of the holder, such as: {{Ghent, Belgium}} <— if a multilingual Location tag exists {{City}} template provides even more city links. For example See Wikipedia on this. would give "Aix-en-Provence". {{en|[[w:City|City]], Country}} <— when no tag exists. Please include links to wikipedias if possible For stolen pieces: "Unknown"; for destroyed ones: leave free.
Notes	(optional, additional information)
Source	How and where you acquired the computer file for this image. Include original URLs (preferably two, embedding web page and image) if downloaded from a web source, or mention the book references where you scanned it (preferably with ISBN and page), such as: ArtRenewal.org : Gallery : Info : Pic Milner, John: Mondrian, p. 35 - ISBN 0714831670
ID	Add a universal identification number from a catalogue raisonné, or museum's inventory number, if available.
Other versions	(optional, link to dedicated subcategory or gallery page, or <gallery> ... </gallery> as in example below)
Permission	License tag(s), such as: {{PD-art|PD-old-100}} <— file swiped from web; artist died 100+ years ago {{PD-self}} {{PD-old-100}} <— file self-made; artist died 100+ years ago

Standard categories associated with this template

• Category:Black and white reproductions of paintings: If the file is a black and white reproduction of a painting (in color), add this category to the file.
• Category:Details of paintings: If the file shows a partial reproduction of the painting, generally focusing on a specific element, add this category to the file.
• Category:Paintings with over-cropped borders: If the file reproduces not 100% of the painting, but misses some of the areas around its borders, add this category to the file.

Media articles missing out the template
