In the first class on Tuesday we started to look at businesses that have some connection with sustainable practice. On Wednesday I asked students to start a list of businesses on the wiki blog
Students were asked to find a business in a tourism sector that interests them and post the link to their website on the blog and write a few words about what they doing in practice towards sustainability.
On Wednesday we discussed an article "The Green Coast" from the Australian Gourmet Traveller, September 2008
http://gourmettraveller.com.au/the_green_coast.htm
Using this article as a reference, we started building a glossary of terms associated with sustainability and tourism; examined some tools and practices adopted by tourism businesses and generally discussed the importance of the environment to tourism.
In class discussions we have been exploring the concept of: what or who is a "good" tourist? What do you think?
Our next session is on Tuesday 26th May and we are heading out to DUNEDIN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT to meet the Operations Manager, Richard Roberts, and have a tour behind the scenes of this state-of-the-art facility. Please email me promptly to let me know if you are coming (or not coming) because I have to arrange transport. We will meet in H516 at 12:55 on Tuesday so we can depart at 1pm. We will be back by 3pm.
