visual feedback

Hello,

I created some artwork in the weekend to illustrate ideas on this page: http://artctrl.me/galleries/2016/05/02/oersprint-start.png

Cheers,

William

Thanks for these, we'll take a look at the storyboard sketches and see if we can incorporate some ideas.

Prospective learners: Scene 3.0 How does it work?

Post feedback on Scene 3.0 for prospective learners by clicking on the reply link.

Mackiwg (talk)18:02, 29 April 2016

Could we also add a mobile device in addition to the laptop with connection. That's important for the developing world context.

Mackiwg (talk)18:15, 29 April 2016

We've got some scenes sketched showing OERu on a mobile screen as well as laptop.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:31, 18 May 2016

Learners participating out of self interest (i.e. learners who are not studying for formal credit) are important participants - they help with peer learning support. We need to be sure that we don't communicate that OERu is restricted to learners studying for formal academic credit.

Mackiwg (talk)18:22, 29 April 2016

Will clearly show this point in the steps.

New partners: Scene 2.0 - Why is OERu awesome?

Post feedback on Scene 3.0 for new partners by clicking on the reply link to this post.

Mackiwg (talk)18:30, 29 April 2016

We need to think carefully about the tag cloud of current partners.

  1. The challenge associated with the costs of remaking the video if a partner doesn't decide to renew membership in the future.
  2. If we are only showing a sample of partners - what is the basis and effect of excluding partners in the video.

Perhaps we need something which will ensure longevity of the video without offending partners we may not include in the tag cloud. For example, the OERu is truly international an has attracted membership from 6 geographical regions of the world including Africa, Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania.

Mackiwg (talk)20:29, 29 April 2016

Tag cloud idea can be dropped.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:28, 18 May 2016

We are missing 'quality in the bullet list of benefits. I suspect we need to rethink the list of Why OERu is awesome drawing on our research data regarding what drives an organisation to join OERu. The order of presentation of the sub bullets is also important.

Mackiwg (talk)20:32, 29 April 2016

We can re-visit these bullet points easily as they will be dynamic text. Have emphasised high quality in scene 5.

With specific reference to the learner video, I would keep the messages plain and direct, without the need to ask further questions initially - i.e. sell the sizzle, explain the concept, and the how to do it.

I might even go with a workflow scenario like:

  1. You find a course you’d like to take from OERu
  1. You register your intent as a student.
  1. You go to the course and study by yourself, or with a tutor
  1. When you’re ready for an assessment, you will…
  1. After you complete your assessment, the institution will...
Mackiwg (talk)11:07, 30 April 2016

The steps have been added to Learners, Scene 3.2 steps with the clarification..."if, and when you're ready for assessment"

New partners: Scene 1.0 - What is the OERu?

Post feedback on Scene 1.0 for new partners by clicking on the reply link to this post.

Mackiwg (talk)18:31, 29 April 2016

Research tells us that the majority of academics and leaders do not know what OER is. Its too complex to define in a short video, but we need to address what open is, for example "Open education widens access to learner especially for those excluded from formal education"

Mackiwg (talk)20:19, 29 April 2016

Copy has been added to the script.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:24, 18 May 2016

Our research also shows that our philanthropic mission to widen access to education is the highest ranking reason why institutions join the OERu.

I think we need to emphasise up front that OERu is a charitable collaboration to distinguish ourselves from commercial start-ups.

Mackiwg (talk)20:22, 29 April 2016

Both points have been incorporated into the script.

Delete Open Education Resources universitas and replace with "OERu provides education to ..."

New partners: Scene 4.0 - How to sign up

Mackiwg (talk)18:25, 29 April 2016

The concept of "economic development" is not a good fit for decision makers in HE - we need to reword for the target audience.

Mackiwg (talk)11:13, 30 April 2016

Economic development point removed.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:20, 18 May 2016

Suggested rewording for Scene 4 from David Porter posted with permission

Delete "economic development" to read as follows:

Help make higher education more sustainable through your support. OERu welcomes expressions of interest from recognised and acredited postsecondary institutions ....

Mackiwg (talk)11:16, 30 April 2016

How about "Help make higher education more sustainable through your support. OERu welcomes expressions of interest from recognised institutions ...." ?

This allows for a more specific definition on the website of what is a 'recognised' institution, and includes the provincial and national teaching agencies who are members.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:23, 18 May 2016

OERu also has a number of provincial and national teaching agencies who are members, eg:

  1. BCcampus
  2. eCampus Alberta
  3. Ako Aotearoa (National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence)
  4. Contact North | Contact Nord

Need to reword that these agencies are also welcome to join the network.

Suggested rewording of Scene 3.0 by David Porter posted with permission.

OERu Partners across five continents are working together to increase access to affordable education, stay competive and explore new opportunities to provide more open education for all

Post script thoughts from Wayne:

  1. Do we need to say anything about quality?
  2. Should we add open education for all especially those learners excluded from the privilege of a tertiary education (Philanthropy is the top reason for joining the network and leaders fear that the OERu model will cannibalise existing learners.)
Mackiwg (talk)11:23, 30 April 2016

Have added both these points to the script.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:20, 18 May 2016

Prospective learners: Scene 1.0 What?

Post feedback on Scene 1.0 for prospective learners by clicking on the reply link.

Mackiwg (talk)18:05, 29 April 2016

My feeling is that that writing out the "Open Education Resources universitas" in the script is not that important for prospective learner (its more important for prospective partners.) Should we treat the "OERu" as the public brand and just refer to the OERu in the script for the learner video?

Mackiwg (talk)18:18, 29 April 2016

This makes sense to me, as long as "Open Education Resources universitas" in its entirety appears somewhere in the video.

Rjhangiani (talk)18:43, 2 May 2016

We can do a version where the logo fades into shot rather than have the words animated on.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:17, 18 May 2016

I think the aspirational/inspirational aspect of the OERu is key for both groups and could be hit a little harder. "no matter where they (YOU?) live, or their background" touches on it, but perhaps we should directly refer to economic, geographic, and other barriers?

Rjhangiani (talk)18:42, 2 May 2016

It may be difficult to expand on this due to timings.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:18, 18 May 2016

Somehow I think we need to convey that the courses are "high quality and complete"...some people think free means low quality and some early open courses were not full courses

Maybe also get in the idea of "flexible ways to study"

Gail

Gail Morong (talk)16:49, 4 May 2016

Have incorporated both points into the script.

Prospective learners: Scene 2.0 - Why?

Post feedback on Scene 2.0 for prospective learners by clicking on the reply link.

Mackiwg (talk)18:03, 29 April 2016

Couple of thoughts on the scene:

  • When depicting the learning scenarios scene we must be cognizant and sensitive of the fact that many learners will be residing in the developing world - so one scene should be a developing world context, i.e. emphasising the text of "anywhere in the world".
  • Learning is hard work - how will a beach scene impact on the target audience? (Not saying that learning shouldn't be fun ;-))
Mackiwg (talk)18:11, 29 April 2016

No problem, we are sketching a range of backgrounds to use throughout both clips. Any ideas you all have for a Developing World background would be useful.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:10, 18 May 2016

Thoughts on the courses

  • For this iteration, I think we should focus on the OERu first year of study - once we have a full curriculum, we can revise the tag cloud sequence at a later date.
  • What about the notion of "try before you buy" - that is if you are new to university or polytechnic study that you can experience what university study is like.
Mackiwg (talk)18:14, 29 April 2016

We will drop the tag cloud idea and have amended the script.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:12, 18 May 2016

Academic awards and credentials are conferred by the partner institutions. OERu branding is a high priority, but we must avoid confusion for learners thinking that the OERu awards the credential. Its more about how the OERu enables you to achieve credentials through recognised institutions.

Mackiwg (talk)20:16, 29 April 2016

I have added a clarification to the visual story in scene 3.2 showing the steps for new learners.

Helenbaxter (talk)19:13, 18 May 2016

When showing different scenes (beach, bus, kitchen) keep in mind different age groups and cultural backgrounds. Be culturally inclusive and appeal to mature learners.
