Victor.mensah (talk)06:10, 10 July 2009

Hove (talk)06:11, 10 July 2009

AGENDA ITEM1: Confirmation of Case Reading and Understanding[edit]

Lets confirm if all have read and understand the case very well? If not where lies your main challenge?

NB: Reply here only

Victor.mensah (talk)06:12, 10 July 2009

I think i understood though i hurridly went thru it

Hove (talk)06:14, 10 July 2009

i've read through but there is too much info, i can't confirm full comprehension...

Kay go (talk)06:16, 10 July 2009

Ok. so at least both of you have read it and there is some understanding. I have read it several times but i wont lie to u that i fully comprehend. Lets start one after the other shortly.

Victor.mensah (talk)06:19, 10 July 2009

the question asks for a detailed analysis of co. + industry (30) recommendations (60) & presentation (10)

Kay go (talk)06:22, 10 July 2009

Yes. I think we should do a SWOT analysis of the company and the industry, recommend based on the SWOT( I think is the major part)

Hove (talk)06:26, 10 July 2009

The Question:

The questions requires for two main parts:
a) A detailed analysis of the company and the industry (30 marks)
b) Your recommendations on appropriate strategic interventions that the organisation should implement in order to counteract the threat of the merger of its two largest competitors (60 marks)

Part b) however has three divisions as follows:
Your recommendations must include:

  1. A focus on the entrepreneurial process, intrapreneurship, innovation and creativity.(20 marks)
  2. An organisation design that will facilitate effective monitoring and control of divisions, stores and management performance, without sacrificing the independence and creativity of individual managers. (20 marks)
  3. The strategic implementation process together with the controls that should be in place to support the monitoring of the implementation of your recommendations. (20 marks)

(Comment.gif: detailed discussions in the next agenda item)

Victor.mensah (talk)06:23, 10 July 2009

may i suggest that we for the first couple of days all work on the detailed analysis, maybe give it until sunday when we can merge our analysis, then since the second part is divisible by three each member tackles on a section...

Kay go (talk)06:29, 10 July 2009

Guys, we are chating now in Agenda Item 2 bellow

Victor.mensah (talk)06:36, 10 July 2009

AGENDA ITEM 2: What is your first impression analysis of the company and industry?[edit]

Kindly express your basic analysis of the issues facing the company first and then the industry here.

Victor.mensah (talk)06:25, 10 July 2009

For me i beleive the company finds itself in a state of uncerteinty right now with the mereger-no merger issues between Staples and Office Depot.

We must also ask the question as to what state the company vis the industry is in now? Since Office Max had made losses in the initial stages of their operations they see some treat here. But there can be opportunities

Kago -- in reply to your post above - that is a good suggestion. What do you think Hove?

I however also think that if we could give ourselves what strikes us immediatly as an answer, it may be helpful??

Victor.mensah (talk)06:34, 10 July 2009

like that we'l all be on the same wavelength so when we go on to make recommendations we'll be talking the same language..

Kay go (talk)06:37, 10 July 2009

Hove has still not responded but by this suggestion i can send a short SoW so that we all do the first part and send perhaps by Monday noon rather. We can have a short chat about what we have each sent in the evening and give ourselves up to the 17th to send through the second parts. We will then circulate a draft 1 of 5 by the Saturday and then we will polish up later?

Is that good?

Victor.mensah (talk)06:41, 10 July 2009

true that, its quite a cut throat industry characterised by intense competition from all sectors, and to maintain or improve its position in the industry Officemax should tread carefully...it requires a well worked strategy is my initial thought

Kay go (talk)06:47, 10 July 2009

I agree gentlemen i was busy writing my detailed analaysis

Hove (talk)06:54, 10 July 2009

Hove, where is that deatiled analysis u mentioned above here? Anyway, make a choice down there in the next Agenda Item

Victor.mensah (talk)06:57, 10 July 2009

AGENDA ITEM 3: Select Your Area of Interest[edit]

Among the three areas, which one do you fancy.

(20 marks)

Reply to this place so that i simply put that in the SoW

Victor.mensah (talk)06:44, 10 July 2009

may i take the first part, lets murder this better than we did that HR assignment

Kay go (talk)06:49, 10 July 2009

Victor.mensah (talk)06:54, 10 July 2009

Victor.mensah (talk)06:59, 10 July 2009
