Background

A Brief History of St Peter’s School

St Peter’s School was established in 1936 by Arthur Francis Brooks Broadhurst. English-born Broadhurst chose Cambridge for the benefits of both its rural setting and its close proximity to the growing centre of Hamilton. The school was established as a preparatory boys boarding school. Broadhurst believed in having the best of everything and engaged Mr Roy Alston Lippincott as the architect because of his reputation of being able to harmonise buildings with landscape. Lippincott had established a reputation in New Zealand having designed the Auckland University Arts Building and a science block at Massey University. The original buildings at the top of the drive (featured in the above picture) were completed in 1936, for the first intake of 36 boys.

In the early 1970’s, St Peter’s expanded into a secondary school for boys. In 1987 the school was transformed into a Year 7-13, fully co-educational day and boarding school.

From a roll of just under 300 in 1985, the school has increased to a roll of 1000 in 2007 comprising half boarders, half day students; half girls, half boys. Modern facilities have recently been completed to give students access to the best equipment, technology and environment.

Special Character

Parents enquiring about an education at St Peter's School regularly mention the importance they place on values and standards.  The Christian faith is the rock on which we build.  Structa Saxo, the school motto means "built on a rock". Through their Chapel services and their Divinity classes, students are taught basic Christian principles.  They are also taught respect for other faiths.

I believe that each child is special and has unique talents that we as educators need to nurture.

My prime goal is for each child to flourish in a happy, safe, positive environment. My commitment is to high standards of performance, behaviour and appearance.

St Peter’s offers students a level of education that provides them with the skills and confidence to continue learning at a higher level. Our focus is on developing compassionate, life long learners who will succeed in a global community. Systems and structures are designed to support academic excellence, pastoral care, spiritual growth, sporting and cultural participation and achievement.

The St Peter’s Way is centred on Christian values and an holistic education based on respect for each person. The positive support of teachers, parents and the school body ensures that students here prosper in body, mind and spirit.
