Thematic content of the course

This course is constructed around four themes. The aim has been to create a learning environment in which the themes provide a dynamic framework for the theory and practice of sport informatics and analytics. Thr four themes are:

  • Introductions
  • Pattern recognition
  • Performance monitoring
  • Audienes and messages

Introductions

This theme, T1, introduces you to informatics and analytics and locates them within the study of sport performance. It discusses a connectivist approach to learning in an open, online course. For more information about T1 see this page.

Pattern recognition

This theme, T2, explores a range of options available to you in the analysis of sport performance. It includes a discussion of the use of a programming language and a software environment for statistical computing and graphics, R, in data analysis. For more information about T2 see this page.

Performance monitoring

This theme, T3, explores the development and use of technologies to monitor performance. It discusses ethical issues relating to the quantification of the self. For more information about T3 see this page.

Audiences and messages

This theme, T4, considers some of the issues relating to the sharing and visualisation of data. It explores the potential for digital storytelling. There is a discussion of the use of feedforward to share data with a range of audiences. For more information about T4 see this page.
