As well as the teacher modelling good reading practice during the school’s reading time, junior classes should follow a class reading programme, organised and managed by the class room teacher. The following are some ideas:

  • Following the senior NCEA wide reading unit standard due dates for senior classes (two per term perhaps?), expect junior students to hand in an assessment task that focuses on a strand of the curriculum and is in synch with your class-focus.
  • Give students plenty of advance notice as to when their assessment tasks are due, explain the task in detail and ask students to glue their tasksheets into their books. Remind your class often that reading assessment tasks are due.
  • For oral assessment tasks organise a schedule where students are expected to present an oral presentation on particular dates over the term.

Establish your expectations early and you’ll be sweet.
