It is important for society that marketing communications, including advertisements, are truthful and ethical. If not, consumers can be misled into paying money for something that does not meet their needs, or may be exposed to inappropriate material. Many countries have laws regulating what may be communicated in marketing materials and it is important that marketing professionals are aware of these.

In the USA, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) exists to protect the nation's consumers.

  1. Read this article from the FTC's website, which provides information regarding US federal regulations on advertising and marketing.
  2. Where would you find similar information for your own country/state/region? Are the restrictions similar?
  3. Post a WENote commenting on one of the restrictions described on the website. For example, do you agree or disagree with the restriction? How easy would it be to enforce?
