Draft online survey of OERu partners to help progress planning for the Minimum Viable Product
Final draft based on feedback (see Discussion tab)
Preamble
The recent OERu partner planning meetings in South Africa were productive and focussed.
We now have a clear goal: to rapidly develop a set of at least 6 general, first year undergraduate subjects by 30th March 2016, and a further 4 by mid 2016.
This will give us a minimum set of 10 subjects which will be a viable first year study pathway for new OERu student to enrol in, and get going with their university education in 2016.
We are calling this “Minimum Viable Product”. Planning meeting members also noted a preference for an offering that is well-rounded and includes basic English, maths and study skills type courses.
There are 4 OERu courses at 100 level completed or nearing completion:
- Regional Relations in Asia and the Pacific (Four micro courses)
- Art Appreciation and Techniques
- Introduction to Indigenous Australia: Culture, history & contemporary issues
- Introduction to Psychology (KPU)
There are 7 further 100 level courses at varying different stages of development which we might be able to include (listed at the bottom of this form).
There is now an urgent need to develop and collaborate on some English, Maths, Study Skills, Digital and academic literacies type courses to round out the program.
OERu Partners' Survey
To enable us to progress planning for the Minimum Viable Product, please let us know the following information:
1a. Does your University have a Certificate or similar award that would allow students to achieve a credential on successful completion of the 1st full year of study? (yes/no/not sure)
1b. Alternatively, does your University have a program of study that would allow students to gain transcript credit (as opposed to conferring an actual award) for successfully completing 1st year courses? (yes/no/not sure)
2. Please provide the URLs for any of these awards/programmes (open text box)
3.Would you be prepared to offer design, subject matter expertise or technical resources to assist in the development of any of these courses:
- Writing and Learning in English foundation course (design/subject matter expertise/technical resources)
- Maths foundation course (design/subject matter expertise/technical resources)
- Learning to learn online course (design/subject matter expertise/technical resources)
- Education 101 course (design/subject matter expertise/technical resources)
- Health 101 course (design/subject matter expertise/technical resources)
(: Q3 needs rethinking. The critical path decision is the ability for the local institution to award transcript credit for the course nomination, so asking for resource contributions in courses we are not sure whether they will carry credit is premature. Until we know what courses institutions can accredit, its hard to ask for specific expertise. However, we must encourage and provide institutions with the option to nominate. I suggest the changes below.)
Substitute for Q3 above
The OERu is calling for nominations for the 1st year of study in the following areas:
- Core skill courses, eg study management, digital literacy, academic and professional writing, english and maths etc.
- Discipline areas: including Arts and humanities, Health, Sciences, Business and Information Communication Technologies, and sustainable development.
3a Is your institution able to nominate an OERu course for formal transcript credit at your institution at the 1st year level?
- No
- Yes, please specify proposed course (open text box)
4. Would your institution be interested in contributing resources to progress our target for Minimum Viable Product for the OERu 1st year of study? Please check the appropriate option - we will contact you to discuss further details.
- Financial resources towards a shared fixed-term position to progress Minimum Viable Product
- Financial resources to outsource the assembly of 1st year courses for the OERu
- Instructional design expertise to support the assembly of OERu courses
- Subject matter expertise (please specify)
- Technical support for assembling courses in WikiEducator
- Other (please specify).
