Session 1: Orientation and goal setting

The purpose of this session is to meet members of the OERu family, review the state of play and establish goals for the day.

  • Time: 10.00am - 11.00am
  • Welcome and introductions: Facilitator: Wayne Mackintosh.
    1. Welcome from our host (Ken Udas - 5 mins)
    2. Participant introductions (25 mins)
    3. Navigating the OERu open planning model (10 mins)

Session 2: Getting model design juices flowing

The purpose of this session is to stimulate thinking about business model ideas and options drawing from real examples

  • Time: 11.00am -11.45am
  • Lead facilitator: Paul Stacey
  • Characteristics of open business models (Abundance versus scarcity, role of CC licenses and other critical aspects.)
  • Rapid open business model designs
    1. Sharing examples of real businesses
    2. Participants invited to suggest an open business model approach
    3. Compare responses provided by participants with the open business model solutions adopted by these organisations.

Session 3: Building blocks for individual business models for OERu partners

The purpose of this session is for participants to work individually to answer key questions relating to an open business model for their own institution that compliments and augments the OERF business model for the OERu. The idea is for participants to share their models and explain the underpinning rationale as a building block for developing shared business models for the OERu in the next session.

  • Time: 11.45am -12.30pm
  • Lead facilitator: Paul Stacey
  • OERF open business model for the OERu: Wayne Mackintosh (10mins)
  • Answers to open business model questions for individual partners
    • Participants are invited to start thinking about their own open business models by answering the following questions (15 mins)
      1. What bundles of products and services will you be offering through the OERu? Which customer needs are you satisfying?
      2. What social good is being generated (beyond revenue and profits)?
      3. What are the most important costs inherent in your business model?
      4. How will you fund or generate revenue for your OERu services?
    • Open sharing of individual business models and underpinning rationale (20 mins)

LUNCH BREAK - 12.30pm to 1.30pm

Session 4: Designing OERu open business models

The purpose of this session is to establish two working groups to design OERu business models for: 1) partners aiming to generate new business opportunities through OERu engagement and 2) partners participating in the OERu as a community service activity.

  • Time: 1.30pm - 2.30pm
  • Lead facilitator: Paul Stacey
  • Group work to design business models for new revenue opportunities and community service priorities (45 mins)
  • Plenary feedback (15 mins)

Session 5: Next steps

The purpose of this session is to discuss next steps in preparation for tabling the business models at the OERu partners meeting in October and related issues.

  • Time: 2.30pm - 3.00pm
  • Lead facilitator: Paul Stacey
  • Plenary discussion of next steps
    1. What do we need to do in preparing the business model submission for the OERu Council of CEOs meeting on 9 October 2015?
    2. How will the OERu partners know what business model factors are working and what isn't?
    3. What does success look like from a business point of view?
    4. Mapping the evolution of open business models over time. How will the model adapt?
