While most visitors to South Africa will experience a trouble-free visit, travellers should note that there is a high level of crime in South Africa. For more information consult the safety tips for travellers published by SouthAfrica.info.

At the hotel

  • Never leave luggage unattended.
  • Leave your hotel key at reception.
  • Lock valuables in the hotel safe.
  • Keep your room locked and always check who is at the door before opening.

In the street

  • Avoid wearing and displaying expensive jewellery, cameras and other valuables
  • Avoid dark and isolated areas.
  • Better to explore in groups and on busy streets.
  • Do not carry large sums of money in cash.
  • If involved in an armed robbery, mugging or car-jacking, do not resist as this could lead to an escalation in violence.

When travelling by car

  • Keep doors locked and windows up at all times.
  • Keep valuables away from view - there have been incidents where car windows are broken and valuables stolen while vehicles are stopped at intersections. Lock valuables in the trunk.
  • Avoid driving after dark or travelling to isolated areas especially if you are unfamiliar with the route and may risk getting lost.
  • Do not stop to assist with vehicle breakdowns or to clear debris from the road.
  • Always be aware of traffic and pedestrians around you especially at intersections or when stopping your vehicle.
  • At night, always park in well-lit areas.
