The New Zealand Collaborative Action and Research Network was formed in May 2009 at an inaugural symposium at the University of Canterbury, with the CARN sponsorship by the Universities of Canterbury, Waikato, and Otago.

NZCARN is the New Zealand hub of the international Collaborative Action Research Network (CARN) and in December, and meets annually at the New Zealand Association for Research in Education (NZARE) conference.

Our logo/picture above emphasises the metaphor we chose at our first symposium - that of a braided river to communicate the many forms of collaborative action and research networking in which both action research and kaupapa Māori research are braids.

The hub has decided that the acronym should be written as NZCARN, rather than the previous versions of "NZCA and RN" or NZCA&RN which related to the metaphore of our braided river. All the braids refer to traditional understandings of action research. It may be referred to simply as the New Zealand CARN hub.
