Read through all the information given to you before starting this assessment activity. Make sure that you understand what you are being asked to do. Ensure that you know what level of performance will be required to obtain an achieved, merit or excellence grade for this achievement standard.

Achievement Criteria for 3.4

Perform the physical activity to achievement level of the nationally developed performance standards, in an applied setting. You are to complete Waka Ama practical training sessions over 9 weeks during class time. Students will participate in a school paddling regatta or Vaka iti competition. Students will actively participate in at least 6 races in 6 different positions in the Vaka. Races will be 250m sprint races after undertaking training and instruction from paddling club members and teachers. Teachers and instructors will assess students competency at the regatta and award a grade for this practical performance on the assessment schedule.

Assessment Schedule - PhysEd/3.4 Waka Ama

Instructions: Students need to attend and actively participate in Paddling sessions and display competencies in outlined areas to gain this achievement standard in an applied setting. Students will also be assessed at a school paddling regatta or Vaka iti competition. Students will actively participate in at least 6 races in 6 different positions in the Vaka. Races will be 250m sprint races after undertaking training and instruction from paddling club members and teachers. Final grades will be awarded and verified by teacher. This will be assessed and verified by paddling instructions and finally by the teacher.

- some rotation of upper body and torso
- pull water to hip only
- paddle exits from hip
Seat 2, #2 Caller

Basic calls made for the rest of the crew: paddles up, hip
Basic calls made for the rest of the crew that are loud and clear for all crew: paddles up, hip

Caller can demonstrate accurate decisions on when to vary timing of the calling e.g 7 stokes or longer if near the start or finish line

The final judgement of achievement, merit and excellence will be awarded as follows:

  • Achievement: Student must gain Achievement in all areas as judged by instructors and teacher
  • Merit: Student must gain Merit or above in all areas as judged by instructors and teacher
  • Excellence: Student must gain Excellence in all areas as judged by instructors and teacher

Note that this performance must be assessed/verified/signed by the teacher
