Glossary:

Independent Variable. The values of an independent variable in a function are not determined by the other variable. In this section, the independent variable is x. Or, from the example given under "Why,", the independent variable would be the number of hours worked.

Dependent Variable. The values of this variable in a function are determined by the independent variable. In the example given under "Why?", the dependent variable is the amount of pay which depends on the number of hours worked.
