Malaita Island

Lat 9° 0' 0S Long 161° 0' 0E Malaita Island located is located to the the north-east of Guadalcanal. There was little wartime combat on Mailaita Island. Later in 1942, an US outpost was built on the island, with standing orders for them to bring in any Japanese prisioners. The Americans brought Malaitan people to Guadalcanal to work on the airstrip and other military infrastructure, because they were reputed to be hard workers. The rivalry between the neighboring Guadalcanal and Malaita islands intensified during and after the war.
