Practice citing and referencing

Now that you know a lot more about citing and referencing, complete the exercises below.

  • This division encapsulates the complexity of PNPCs because they are a hybrid form of character. They are not the heroes, but they are not faceless NPCs either. This dichotomy is what makes them so interesting and deserving of much further study. PNPCs are an important fixture in modern video games.

This is a direct quote from Christine Daviault taken from pages 445-446 of her arcticle titled Does Game Playing Experience Have an Impact on the Player-PNPC Relationship?, which was published in the Bulletin of Science, Technology & Society on 5 December 2012. How would you insert this quote in-text both in its entirety and paraphrased? How would you list it in your reference list? Use the APA citation style.

  • Male bloggers also exercise more symbolic capital in their blogging practices, which becomes apparent in the blogs of key political office-holders and speakers (Medvedev, Obama and Pelosi). There is a list of instructions on Dmitrij Medvedev's blog about how to blog properly. The list of friends also serves as an original moderator, allowing or not allowing comments on the post.

This is a direct quote taken from page 101 of a book titled Gendered Transformations: Theory and Practices on Gender and Media, published in 2011 by Intellect, located in Bristol, UK. The book was edited by Tonny Krijnen, Claudia Alvares & Sofie Van Bauwel and the quote came from a chapter titled Political Blogging: At a Crossroads of Gender and Culture Online? (pages 93-113) written by Olena Goroshko and Olena Zhigalina. How would you insert this quote in-text by summarising it? How would you list it in your list of works cited? Use the MLA citation style.

  • The 2015 School Crime Supplement data tables show the relationship between reported bullying victimization and other crime-related variables, such as reported presence of gangs, guns, drugs, and alcohol, and hate-related graffiti at school; selected school security measures; student criminal victimization; and personal fear, avoidance behaviors, fighting, and weapon carrying at school.

This quote comes from a report published by the National Center for Education Statistics online. What would be the best way to integrate this quote into your essay (i.e. quote in its entirety, paraphrase or summarise)? How would you list it in your reference list? Use the APA citation style.

Once you're done with all three quotes, run them through the interactive APA and MLA citation generator. Select a citation style, then click on the Enter manually link under the search bar. Select the type of work you want to cite from the drop down menu and enter the information before generating.

Share your results with your classmates by writing a blog post. Remember to tag (Wordpress) or label (Blogger) your blog post using the course tag: enga103

Note that you can also record your reflections in a written journal, if you prefer, but sharing your insights with your classmates means that you can trigger a discussion that may lead to a deeper understanding as we can all benefit from each other's experience.
