Triggers
The following situations may bring on a person’s first episode of mania or depression.
- Stress
- Not having a regular sleep schedule
- Alcohol or drugs
- Stopping your medicine
- Starting medicines for depression (in some cases), or other medicines and herbal products
- Having thyroid problems and other medical conditions
- Seasonal changes
- Holidays
- Illness
- Disagreements with family or friends
- Problems at work
- The death of a loved one
- Marriage
- Starting college
- Starting a new job
Signs and Symptoms
The above triggers can bring on the following signs and symptoms of a bipolar disorder. They can be different in each person, making it difficult to diagnose. There are, however, some key indicators of the illness. The symptoms are what the person with a possible bipolar disorder feels or thinks. Signs are what others around them see as red flags of a bipolar disorder.
