Definition
Zoom out

Camera technique whereby the camera remains stationary but the lens is adjusted to make it seem like the subject is moving further away from the viewer. (visual)

Examples

The shot to the right shows the camera zooming out from a shot of a tree fern. This allows the audience to see more of the surrounding landscape, like taking a step back.

Typical effects

  • Makes the subject appear to increase in size.
  • Makes the viewer feel like they are moving closer to the subject.
  • Reveals more of the context (surrounding information).
