## INTRODUCTION

In construction technology, the position of floors poses a big challenge to the effectiveness of the building as a whole. Be cause the floor is in direct contact with the ground, it is very important that it is prevented from the effect of moisture or other forms.

The section contains the need for damp proofing. The materials that are suitable for damp prevention like asphalt, non-ferrous metal, bituminous and others are discussed.

THE NEED FOR DAMP PREVENTION IN FLOORS. The positions of floors in buildings show that they are always in contact with the soil. The moisture content of the ground very often poses a threat to the floor. Usually, a floor that is exposed to moisture penetration may be adversely affected. Constant exposure of the floor to moisture may also affect its function and its structure. By providing damp proof in a floor construction, it will serve as a barrier to prevent moisture uprising. The wet condition experience in most buildings due to moisture uprising can be avoided through the provision of damp prevention in the floors. MATERIALS SUITABLE FOR DAMP PREVENTION. Among the types of materials suitable for damp prevention in floors are as follows:

 -- Asphalt laid in one or two layers hot underneath the floors
-- A layer of bituminous felt.
-- A layer of water proofed cement mortar


For suspended timber floors, the following damp prevention materials can protect the timber members: -- Two or more courses of engineering bricks laid in 1:3 portland . -- Two courses of good slates laid half bond in 1:3 portland Cement mortar. -- A layer of non-ferrous metal such as sheet lead, copper or zinc.
