Course aim

To identify and evaluate the general objectives of business and the context in which it operates.

The purpose of this course is to introduce learners to the general concept of business, business terminology, concepts, and current business issues. The course will initially focus on the internal business environment the role played by Human Resource Management, Accounting, Sales, Marketing, Operations and management co-ordination in an organisations’ success. The course will also consider the choices that businesses have in respect of their legal status and structure and the implications of these choices. Lastly, the focus will shift to the external environment examining the impact that external factors can have on a business.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe and assess the functions and tasks that businesses perform in order to meet their objectives.
  2. Describe and discuss the nature, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of different forms of business and organisational structure.
  3. Describe and explain the impact on a business of the environment in which it operates.

Indicative content

Understanding the role of various functions within organisations, for example:

  • Management
  • Human Resources
  • Sales and Marketing
  • Accounts
  • Operations (Purchasing, Production, Stores and Logistics)

Each function is examined from the perspective of their contribution to the overall success of the organisation and how they interact with one another.

The pros and cons of sole traders, partnerships, public and private companies, legal implications and structures.
