Aim
Consciousness, Thinking & Memory is the third of three free micro Open Online Courses (mOOCs) that jointly constitute the first half of a first-year university introductory psychology course. It is designed for undergraduate students who wish to work towards a major in psychology, students who wish to take a psychology course as an elective, and for informal learners everywhere.
This course will explore some of the more complex mental processes that psychology researchers investigate.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this micro-course you will be able to:
- Describe dual processing and explain the role of attention in the experience of conscious awareness
- Use evidence to explain some of the challenges of studying consciousness and it various states
- Explain how schemas can result in cognitive strategies and biases that influence problem-solving and decision-making
- Distinguish between memory as a function and memory as a record and identify some of the neural correlates of memory
- Explain how declarative memory tends to work and the ways that it leads us astray
- Read and summarize current published research
- Write thoughtfully about psychological processes and research
- Critically analyze and discuss psychological processes and research
