Noun is an important part of Parts of Speech. We should clear understanding about Noun. Without learning Noun properly we cannot learn English Grammar properly. So we have to learn noun and their classification with very carefully. We shall discuss here about noun and their classification.

Definition of Noun |
A Noun is a word which used for naming a person, place or thing. Some examples are given below:
1. Motahar is a good boy.
2. Dhaka is the Capital of Bangladesh.
3. Honesty is the best policy.
4. The bird is lovely.
5. Sumi is the tallest girl in the class.
6. Gold is a precious metal.
Classification of Noun |
There are kinds of Noun, as following:
- Proper Noun
- Common Noun
- Collective Noun
- Material Noun
- Abstract Noun.

Proper Noun
Proper Noun specify the name of a person or place or a thing.
Person name
Such as – Harun, Mukul, Mukta, Tania, Zerin, Sristy etc.
Name of Places
Country - Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Japan etc.
Town/City - Dhaka, Khulna, Dinajpur, Kolkata etc.
Village - Beroil, Noldi, Sreepur, Joka etc.
Rivers - The Padma, The Jamuna, The Meghna etc.
Month - January, February, March, April etc.
Day - Sunday, Monday etc.
Newspaper - The Daily Star, The Ittefaq etc.
Nation - The Muslim, The Hindu, The Budhist etc.
Common Noun
Common noun specify the general name of a class of person, animal or a thing. Such as –
Person – Man, Women, Girl, Boy, Sister, Brother, Teacher, Student etc.
Animal – Cow, Cat, Dog, Horse, Tiger etc.
Thing - Chair, Table, Book, Pen etc.
Collective Noun
Which noun means the name of some person or thing of same classes collectively not separately we can called them collective noun. Such as :
Football Team - a collection of players. Family - a collection of members. Army - a collection of soldiers. Garden - a collection of flowers. Library - a collection of books. Class - a collection of students.
Material Noun
Which noun specify the name of a total material not partial called them material noun.
Example : Gold, Silver, Wood, Iron, Rice etc. But, Necklace made by Gold is a Common noun not Material noun, Table made by Wood is a Common noun not Material noun.
Abstract Noun
Which Noun means the quality or condition of a man or material called them Abstract Noun.
Example : Honesty is the best policy. Kindness is the great virtue. Industry is the key to success. Necessity is the mother of invention.
