This video identifies respect, listening, and focusing on issues instead of personalities as key principles of effective conflict resolution. It also describes five steps involved in using the interest-based relational approach:
- Set the scene
- Advocate for discussion rather than aggression to resolve the problem
- Gather information
- Find out about each person's viewpoint - and make clear that you respect them
- Agree on the problem
- Ensure there is a shared understanding of the problem
- Brainstorm solutions
- Work on thinking up solutions together - make sure everyone feels equally involved
- Negotiate a solution
- Try to find one that works for everyone
