Read the section on Conversation as a ritual in the first part of Chapter 16.5: Rituals of conversation and interviews in Saylor Academy (Ed.) 2012. Business Communication for Success. (See page(s) 627 - 636 in PDF version.)

This reading explains the five stages that are common to any conversation, describing conversation as a social ritual.

The reading goes on to examine one particular workplace conversation ritual, the job interview. This section of reading is optional, because a detailed knowledge of interview practices is not required for this course; however, the information is useful for anyone who may be involved in a job interview and it also provides a good illustration of one type of interpersonal business communication. (You do not need to do any of the exercises in the chapter.)
