Guide visitors through an adventure tourism activity of more than a day
- Skills and techniques are applied to maximise visitor comfort and enjoyment.
Range: skills and techniques may include, but are not limited to - interpersonal skills, technical skills, interpretative skills.
- Visitors are informed about the features of the natural environment in accordance with enterprise procedures.
Range: features may include, but are not limited to - history, flora, fauna, hazards.
- Visitors are guided through the activity at a pace commensurate with their enjoyment and comfort.
- Activity is paced and adapted within visitor capacity to meet daily deadlines.
- Group management skills are demonstrated to maintain group coherence for the duration of the activity.
Range: group management skills include but are not limited to - negotiation, conflict resolution, support, coaching.
- Environmental care practices are explained and practised in accordance with the relevant codes of practice and enterprise procedures.
Range: codes of practice refer to those formal and informal codes relating to conservation of the natural environment and fire safety, such as those produced by the Adventure Tourism Council.
- Food is prepared and served to meet visitor needs and in accordance with enterprise procedures and legal requirements.
Range: visitor needs may include, but are not limited to - dietary needs, religious and cultural observance, hygiene, health and safety.
- Food and equipment are cleared away and stored in accordance with enterprise procedures, legal requirements and environmental care practices.
- Overnight accommodation is arranged to meet the needs of the visitors and in accordance with activity schedule and enterprise procedures.
- Timeframes and deadlines are met in accordance with established schedules and enterprise procedures.
Maintain visitor safety during an adventure tourism activity of more than a day
- The safety and emergency procedures, for maintaining visitor safety during any event affecting the safety and welfare of the visitors during the adventure tourism activity, are described in accordance with enterprise procedures and commensurate with the location and level of risk involved in the activity.
Range: modified itinerary, first aid, on the spot rescue techniques and procedures, external rescue agencies.
- Factors affecting visitor safety are monitored and responded to, to ensure
visitor safety in accordance with enterprise procedures. Range: factors may include, but are not limited to - pace and level of activity, visitor competency, shelter, refreshments, group leadership, climate.
- Contingency planning demonstrates preparedness for unscheduled incidents.
Definitions
- Enterprise procedures refers to the documented quality management requirements relating to the policies, procedures, and practices of the enterprise to which the individual belongs, and may include code/s of ethics or code/s of practice of professional bodies relevant to the industry.
- Adventure tourism activity refers to a planned activity undertaken in a natural environment which involves some physical challenge.
- More than a day means that the activity comprises a minimum of 2 days and 1 night.
