Human trafficking, including forced labour and sexual exploitation, is identified by the UN as a serious crime and grave violation of human rights. It is an issue that impacts on every country in the world, including developed countries. While there are no reliable figures to quantify the number of victims (due to the hidden nature of this crime), it is estimated that it represents over $30 billion dollars in illegal international trade each year. Eliminating trafficking and sexual exploitation of girls and women (who are disproportionately affected by this crime) is identified as a target within the Sustainable Development Goals.
