Welcome to Concept Corner! Key concepts for this module are:
Refugees Refugees are legally defined in the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. Refugees are people who have left their country due to a well-founded fear of being persecuted, on grounds such as race, religion or political opinion. See the full legal definition in Activity One. You can also find out more in this helpful overview: Martin Griffiths and Terry O’Callaghan, International Relations: The Key Concepts (New York: Routledge), pp. 269-71.
Refoulement/non-refoulement Refoulement is the returning of a refugee to the state from which s/he sought refuge. The principle of non-refoulement is an important principle in international law, which forbids the return of a refugee to their country of origin, where they may experience persecution. Find out more in Activity One – see Article 33 of the Refugee Convention.
