A firewall is a software or hardware device that restricts access to your computer to authorized traffic. It screens signals coming in from and going out to the Internet. An example of a software firewall is the protection that comes with an operating system that prevents unauthorized access to your computer. An example of a hardware firewall is a router that sits between incoming Internet traffic and your computer. A site like 'Shields Up' will inform you on how secure your computer is.
