Aims To develop students’ understanding of basic electrical theory, basic digital circuits and basic electrical/electronic construction methods.
Learning Outcomes At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to: • Understand and manipulate basic electrical formulae; • Understand and use electrical measuring instruments; • Understand and describe the electrical supply system; • Understand and describe the electrical power supplies including the components making up a power supply; • Understand and describe the principles of operations of a DC motor; • Understand and describe basic electronic components – diode, transistor, resistor, capacitor and transistor; • Understand Logic gates – AND, OR, NAND, NOR and NOT; • Construct Truth Tables.
Content Electricity: • Principles of electricity (voltage, current, resistance, power, temperature
rise, capacitance, conduction induction, magnetism, earthing)
• Safety devices (insulation, fuses, circuit breakers switch gear RCD’S) • AC theory (power factor) Learning/Teaching Methods • Lectures • Tutorials • Practical
Assessment • One theory test (20%) • One practical test (20%) • Two assignments (30% each, total 60%)
Attendance Requirements 90%
Completion requirements To complete this course, students must meet the attendance requirement and achieve an aggregate total of 50% or greater.
