Invitation to help develop the FAQ page

As an open education initiative, the OERu works with learners and the community to develop and improve our course materials collaboratively. We use the pilot offering of OERu courses as an authentic opportunity to develop the frequently asked questions page (FAQs) for future iterations of the course.

Please help us in developing the FAQ page by posting any questions (and prospective answers) you recommend for inclusion based on your experience of the wiki skills learning pathway. Login to WikiEducator and post your questions on the source page in the wiki. Yes, this site was developed using a wiki and you can help to improve the course site for future iterations.

Would better search and find technologies for OER improve adoption?

Yes, better search and find technologies could improve the mainstream adoption of OER for busy educators. It's interesting to note that the difficulty of searching for suitable closed resources is not cited as a reason against the adoption of all rights reserved materials. The fact is, in a world of information overload, diversity and choice will increase exponentially. Our approach at the OER Foundation is to improve the search skills of educators to learn how to filter searches for license types. A world where OER is distributed across the Internet is better than the risks associated with a small number of large respositories, walled gardens and search rankings informed by metrics which have little to do with the values of education. Experienced OER developers have refined their skills to find high quality resources. This is an opportunity for democratising education rather than a barrier for progress. Today's search technologies are more than adequate to progress meaningful adoption of open education. In time, as more users prefer using open alternatives, supporting technologies for finding them will improve.
