Topic: Cyclone
Children will be able to read and learn how cyclone can affect their lives and how to prepare for such natural disaster. |
Monday
News Time
Children will be able to converse and talk about personal experiences and also listen and respond to others |
1. Gather children in front of the classroom.
2. Allow children to share their news
3. Now because this is the first day for children to learn about weather, this lesson is to introduce the word ‘weather’ by brainstorming;
4. Teacher show simple weather pictures drawn on cards.
5. Each child pick a weather picture card, show to the class and talk about
Resources: Chart paper, markers, picture cards letter ‘C’.
Handwriting
For the children to practice writing the letter of the week ‘C’ correctly on their slates and also be able to make the sound of it. |
1. Pass around cut out letter 'C'
2. Practice the letter ‘C’ sound by reading this poem.
Cats cats cats
Cats climb cars
Cats climb couches
Cats catch rats and climb coconuts too
Cats cats cats
3. Children to practice writing letter ‘C’ in the air with their pencils or fingers
4. Children to practice several times writing the letter ‘C’ on the slate board.
5. Write up this handwriting activity on the board, and then ask children to copy it on their slates.

6. Teacher checks each child to see they do it correctly and help those who need help.

Spelling
Children will be able to learn, spell and recognise three high frequency words and two words from the text use for shared reading. They can be able to use these words in correct sentences and also during their other writing activities. |
Shared Reading
Children will be able to listen and respond to text, recall the main ideas and relate them to personal experiences (Listening and reading functions, L1/2) |
1. Teacher copy the story from the book ‘Cyclone Warning’ on a large chart before the lesson
2. Gather the children and revise ‘what is weather?’
3. Ask children what they know about cyclones. Write the word ‘cyclone’ on the blackboard and note children’s responses.
4. Ask children to talk about any of their experience with cyclones
5. Introduce the story by talking about the title ‘ Cyclone Warning’ and children’s prediction of the story
6. Read the story
7. Talk about the story
'Follow up activity
1. Write up a two weeks weather chart. This is for the children to fill in each day’s weather during the two weeks that they are learning about weather.
2. Ask children to help you to write the days of the week on the chart. Put the weather chart on the wall and start the weather for today with the children.
3. Ask the children to talk about what they want to do on weather like that.}}

Guided Reading
Task Board Management
Grouping must be in their reading abilities. While the teacher is busy with one group the rest can work independently on their first task then after 10 minutes or so (depend on the teacher) the groups can move on to their second task. The teacher will still with the guided reading group. Task for each day should be written and display for the class before lesson begins.
For example;
Red Guided reading with the teacher
Yellow Learning alphabet, then after reading Big books & Poems
Blue Independent reading & Spelling activity
Gold Free writing & Independent reading from boxes
Guided Reading
1. Red Group – ‘The Weather Chart Book’
- Ask children to talk about today’s weather and think about what their family members what to do on weather like this.
- Introduce the book by talking about the cover and prediction the story.
- Talk and read each page as you go.
- After reading ask children to draw their favourite weather from the story and explain to a friend why.
2. Yellow Group First task – Children practicing their spelling words by using the cut out alphabetical letters. Second task – Children read big books and poems written on cards or chart
3. Blue Group First task – Do independent reading using the books from the boxes. These books will be selected from the library. Purpose: To enable children to select and read independently for enjoyment.
Second task – Children practicing their spelling words in pairs or as the whole group by using the cut out alphabetical letters.
4. Gold Group First task – Each child to draw an important thing to take when a cyclone comes, for example match to lit fire. Second task – Do independent reading using the books from the boxes
