Complementary medicines have been steadily gaining in popularity over the last 40 years. A couple of generations ago, acupuncture had hardly been heard of in the West, and herbal medicine and dietary supplements were unusual. However today more than two thirds of Australians either use complementary medicines or visit complementary medicine practitioners. And this is not unusual - the same phenomena is occurring in many countries around the world.

In this course we will look in some detail at the people who use complementary medicines - why do they use them?

what is the evidence behind their use, what counts as evidence ? What are the debates that have emerged from their increasing popularity?
