Girmay Tesfay Belay is an Ethiopian national. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Agricultural Economics in August 1993 from Alemaya University of Agriculture, Ethiopia. He completed his M.Sc. in Rural Resources Management at Bangor College, the University of North Wales, UK, in March 1996. He completed his PhD studies in Social Sciences (in Development Economics and Policy) from the Wageningen University, the Netherlands, in December 2006. He has over 9 years of teaching and research experience(as a graduate assistant, 1993/4, as a lecturer, May 1997-August 2001 and August 2002-May 2004, and from January 2007 till present as Assistant Professor) at Mekelle University, Ethiopia. His is currently working as the Dean of the faculty of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources at Mekelle University.
His area of teaching and research interest include rural development policy, natural resources management, farm management and agricultural extension, agricultural economics and marketing, impact assessment related to irrigation development and conservation projects and biofuel development. He has done research and published in the following areas: collective action in natural resource management, land contracts, productivity and land management, risk perception of farmers and land management, determinants of choice of development pathways in rural areas. His works are published as book chapter, journal article, reports and working papers.
Currently, he is running five research projects registered under the research directorate of Mekelle University in the areas of land and water contract in irrigated areas; land titling and its effect on land management and welfare of households; Jatropha feasibility for biofuel production in the northern Ethiopia; evaluation of water harvesting programs; and climate risk adaptation of smallholders.
