THE PREPARATION OF THE ELEMENT IODINE
Chemicals:
- Beaker containing about 30 g of potassium iodide (labeled “Potassium Iodide”)
- Beaker containing about 20 g of manganese dioxide (labeled “Manganese (IV) Oxide”)
- 4 dropping bottles , each with about 10 mL concentrated phosphoric acid (labeled “Phosphoric Acid”)
- 4 dropping bottles, each with about 20 mL of hexane (labeled “Hexane”)
- 2 dozen ice cubes
Equipment:
- bunsen burners
- flint strikers
- ring stands
- large rings
- gauze heating pads
- 100 mL beakers
- 10 mL graduated cylinders
- small test tubes
- test tube holders
- watch glasses to cover top of 100 mL beakers
- weighing boats
- 2 automatic balances (0.01 g)
- stirring rods
- latex gloves
NOTE: LAB REQUIRES USE OF FUME HOODS
