Design workplace learning activities

Many of these activities will occur organically in the workplace when the timing is right. However, it is good practice to plan and design how these activities will fit within your training.

When designing workplace activities consider:

  • What does the learner already know?
  • What tasks can the learner perform to give them an opportunity to practice?
  • How will you coach and interact with the learner?

Provide a brief or a job card to the learner.

For a beginner When your learner is new to a task have them shadow an experienced person and encourage them to ask as many questions as they like. Support them by reinforcing that the only silly question is the one that they don’t ask. At the completion of the task, ask them to provide an overview of how the task was performed, and what they learned.

For an intermediate to experienced learner This is when you shadow your learner. Give them the opportunity to practice and provide them with your full attention.
