Structure the resource

Now that you have considered the content required you should create a high level plan. You can use a word document or a PowerPoint and create a template for a storyboard that can be used for future projects.

This plan needs to have the following information:

  • name of qualification or job skill
  • unit or module name
  • a summary of the learning outcomes to be addressed
  • a list of topics and sub-topics that relate to the learning outcomes.

Create the resource

When creating the resource keep in mind that it will need to be developed into your TVET organisations Learning Management System (LMS). Provide clear instructions to the developer and provide the necessary links to external resources, placeholders for activities and provide source references for images if you have curated them from the internet.

For readings, use the sub-topics as headings and begin to populate the text. Ensure that you sequence the reading in a logical way. If the topic is not your area of expertise it is valuable to consult a subject matter expert. Ask them to explain how a task is completed and use this knowledge to build your resource. Research the internet to find any existing content that can be curated. If using existing content embed the links into your resource and reference the source. Keep in mind that the learner should be introduced to what they are learning, why they are learning and what they will need to know and do when it comes time to be assessed.

For presentations, use the sub-topics to create slides. Populate the slides with images and minimal text that gives a simple overview of the desired outcomes. These can be used to create narrated PowerPoints.

For videos, use the sub-topics and create an overview of the information you would like to convey. When creating a demonstration video ensure that you have all of the physical resources such as tools at hand before recording your video. A master craftsperson will be able to naturally demonstrate how a task is performed. Make sure that the person being recorded explains the task at the same time as they are demonstrating how to do it. Use good lighting and make sure that the camera is focussed on the task being performed.

Evaluate the resource

Ask a peer to read or view the resource and ask them if it is logical and makes sense. Fresh eyes looking over the resource will help find any spelling and grammatical errors as well as help to identify whether the content flows.

Adjust the resource

Based on the feedback provided make any necessary changes to ensure that you produce a resource of the highest quality.

Develop the resource

The resource content is now ready to upload into your TVET organisations LMS.
