Shivani (22ENG0632) FILM REVIEW: JANE EYRE (1997) Today I will be presenting the review of the movie Jane Eyre, which was released in 1997. The plot of this movie has been adapted from a novel Jane Eyre, written by the English writer Charlotte Bronte. It was published under her pen name Currer Bell on 19 October 1847. Jane has lived a very miserable life at her aunt’s home and in the Lowood School. Few years later, she journeys to Thornfield after having been placed an advertisement for employment as a governess. She has been hired by Mrs. Fairfax, (a housekeeper) to teach Adele, Daughter of the brooding Mr. Rochester. After much trepidation, Eyre and Rochester begin a romantic relationship, but dark secrets surrounding Rochester threatens to destroy the couple’s love. This movie lies in the category of romance and drama. It was released on 9 March 1997 and has been directed by Robert Young. IMDb has given it 7 out of 10 points and it has come out as a successful movie. If we analyze the plot elements, then, the rising action takes place when the wife of Mr. Rochester is revealed and towards the end of the film, when Jane decides to return to Mr. Rochester after many years. Initially, the sequence seems very monotonous and dull but as the story moves ahead and the action rises, the exhilaration too increases. It has impromptus climax by having a happy ending. As, we know that everything has its own pros and cons. Therefore, while looking towards its positive side, we get to know that it has very well portrayed the original story of the novel but when we move towards evaluating the technical and creative elements of the film, then, the film has many disparities regarding its portrayal, which includes camera techniques, dialogues, costumes, symbols etc. The entire movie has been filmed with a very dark background or we can say that with no proper light setup. In the story as Mr. Rochester has been described, he is not falling upon that description of being rich as the location for shooting is not chosen properly. Jane Eyre also acts as a narrator, thus making this whole plot of her own perspective. At last, it can be concluded that the overall focus of the movie is on the hardships faced by Jane Eyre in her life. The character of the Jane has been portrayed very subtle or we can say too passive that she seems to be lost in few scenes, whereas, Rochester’s character has been portrayed as very bulky, being too obvious.
