VICTORIAN LITERATURE
1997 ‘JANE EYRE’ MOVIE REVIEW

Jane Eyre is a 1997 film adaptation of Charlotte bronte’s timeless novel ‘Jane Eyre’ delivers a captivating portrayal of love, resilience in the 19th century. This movie brings to life a timeless tale of love, hardship, and self-discovery. . The movie follows the journey of the orphaned Jane. Directed by Robert young, the movie masterfully encapsulates the essence of the source material while offering a fresh perspective on the beloved story.

Robert Young who i feel like has featured great actors like Samantha mortan as the indomitable Jane Eyre and CIARAN as Mr. Rochester. Both these actors have done their part so well in the movie.

Morton's performance as Jane is a standout, as she brilliantly encapsulates the character's inner strength, intelligence, and unwavering spirit. From her early years at the forbidding Lowood School to her time as a governess at Thorn field Hall, Morton's acting captured both the vulnerability and resilience that define Jane. Ciarán Hinds makes an impact as Mr. Rochester in contrast to Morton. Rochester is portrayed by Hinds in a way that creates a balance between his eventual vulnerability and his brooding depth. The magnetic draw between Morton and Hinds' characters and the development of their relationship are brilliantly conveyed by their on-screen chemistry. The film’s cinematography and art direction deserve commendation for their ability to transport the audience to the gloomy and mysterious landscape of 19th century England. The movie is great, its attention to detail transport the audience to the Victorian era, immersing them in the world of characters. It has also shown the emotional aspects very nicely. The film also manages to capture the social aspects and struggle for autonomy. The dialogue remains faithful to the Victorian period adding authenticity to the characters.

However I feel like some scenes were rushed in the film like they could have shown more and also the side characters were given very less time in the screen play. Overall I would give 4 stars to the movie considering how authentic the movie was.
