Treaty breaches

AIMS:

To develop students’ understanding of the breaches of the treaty facilitated through legislature, how breaches included many taonga: land, waterways, health, education, language, and leadership, and how these breaches have contributed to many of the challenges in NZ today OUTCOMES:

  • Identify how specific laws breached acts of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Understand the number of breaches & their repercussions
  • Suggest ways that breaches have effected society today and what can be done to alleviate these effects
Ngā Tohu: Signatures

MATERIALS/RESOURCES:

  • Videos: Koha episodes on ‘Raupatu: Land Loss’ (Parts 1 & 2, if available); ‘Ngā Tohu: Signatures’
  • Course workbook & lecture notes (copy of PowerPoint)
  • Interactive quiz on LMS or online
  • Guest speakers if available (this semester the students heard from Buddy Mikaere – he discussed leaving the Rena wreck on Astrolabe Reef)

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

  • Karakia Timatanga
  • Go around the class – each student to say one thing they learned, one thing that made them think, one surprising element, or one question they thought about during the preceding lecture
  • Discuss any questions that are raised
  • If ‘Ngā Tohu: Signatures’ was used in the lecture, use the questions below
If ‘Ngā Tohu: Signatures’ was used in the lecture, a group discussion can centre on the questions:
1. What is tuku whenua? Discuss its importance in the movie ‘Ngā Tohu: Signatures’.
2. What does it mean to be a kaitiaki? What are the responsibilities of a kaitiaki? Relate this to the movie.
3. What is wahi tapu? Discuss the importance of this concept in the movie ‘Ngā Tohu: Signatures’.
4. What were the differences between Māori and Pakeha views towards women and marriage? Relate this to the movie.
5. What is meant by communal living and tribal ownership? How did the Pakeha try to change this way of life? Relate this to the movie.
  • The Land Loss video can be used with group discussion.
  • If in a computer room, students to access the LMS or online interactive quiz on breaches – if not available, then assign students to complete this activity in their own time

EVALUATION:

  • Ability to actively participate in discussion
  • Interactive quiz on LMS or online – the questions and the breaches included vary each time the quiz is opened
  • Reflection 2 completed for assessment – the topic will be drawn from the previous lecture and usually deals with the content of the ‘Ngā Tohu: Signatures’ video or the points made by the guest speaker
