B. Experience

            Experience of working in a library or related service area

• Ten years continuous cognate work experience in academic libraries.

• In pioneering capacity, I served last as the Head, Department of Information Resources Management and Coordinator of the General education courses of the university.

• As the Deputy University Librarian, I am effectively responsible for the smooth coordination of the activities at the acquisition, audiovisual, reprographic sections and the entire library.

• Regularly vetting catalogued books, journals and non-prints by library staff using the LC classification schemes and also ensuring that they are done in compliance with the AACR2 and MARC set rules.

• Handles users’ enquiries and providing assistance in reference services to patrons.

• Highly proficient and with vast experience in the usage of catalogues and maintenance of databases, and information systems for acquisition, reference and research purposes.

• Right from trainee librarian position to date, I have been involved in the analyses of resource materials, cum provision of abstracting and indexing services as to ensure ease of access to succinct information about the complex materials for the benefit of library users.

• Experience of working in a support role for one of the following: information literacy; collection development; library service development

• By my training and cognate exposures on the academic librarianship practice spanning a decade, I have the required knowledge and capability for pragmatic exploration of relevant information sources [such as ERIC, COCHRANE, AGORA, PUBMED, CINAHL, and so on] and various databases which expertise, have been beneficial to the users of the library, staff and students alike, in support of their teaching, learning, research activities on one hand and effective delivery of quality library and information services on the other hand.

• Provide training on information search to users and library staff whilst also guiding the students on how to write their project reports and compile bibliographies for them.

• With the proper use of relevant selection aids, recommendations from faculty and with the support of library committee, I am always achieving success in collection development through sourcing of appropriate materials to meet the specific needs of the different categories of audience that the library serves.

• On behalf of the university community and with appropriate guidance from the University Librarian, I am always the contact person with the publishers, databases’ vendors and sister libraries especially regarding licensing issues, document delivery, resources’ subscription renewals and other services that can bring about our library growth.

• Understands well the principles of freedom of access to information vis-à-vis protection of intellectual property rights of the creator and the sensitivity of censorship in information storage and dissemination for use. As far as possible, I paste notices in the reprographic section to safeguard their violation by library users.


            C. Experience of leading projects and managing small teams

 I am creative and analytically objective in thought. I am open to diverse views and respect other peoples’ opinions on issues of common concern while working in a team.  By virtue of my headship responsibilities, especially at my former position in the academic department, I have been involved in staff supervision, staff performance appraisal and evaluation including issues on discipline.  As a Team leader in my present workplace, I am a good listener, approachable by and accessible to my subordinates. As much as practicable, I rely on my team for brainstorming on the procedure/steps to take in executing a given schedule.  More often, specific tasks are assigned to every staff under my supervision, with reasonable targets on expected quality and deadlines for outcome to be achieved set and agreed on.  I provide guidance on direction to follow through leading by example and periodically reporting progress and referring areas of doubts to my line manager, for appropriate guidance and action to take.

           D. Experience of work in a higher education context

• My deep commitment to my chosen career, the Library and Information Work, willingness to learn new things coupled with my continuing desire to offer the required expertise in the exploration of relevant electronic resources toward the satisfaction of information needs of the numerous clients of the university libraries where I have worked are not to be impugned. • I am familiar with library routines, strategies for information handling and appropriate dissemination in support of academic and research activities within higher education institutions especially in libraries serving their basic faculties. • I have some understanding of workability of the higher education, by virtue of my previous involvement in some vital committees, notably the senate, academic congregation, Curriculum Committee, Library Committee and as a departmental head. • As a deputy librarian at my present workplace, I ensured regular collection development (books’ acquisitions, subscriptions to serials and non-prints), cataloguing and classification, whilst also successfully operating the library management system, coordinating circulation and effectively managing loan services.

 Arising from my emotional stability and the sense of creativity /initiatives imbued in me for setting priorities, added to my previous administrative exposures as a head of department, I have been able to work without immediate supervision, even under pressure, working to deadlines and turning out desired outcomes for the achievement of quality and responsive library service.  I have always maintain cordial relationship with library staff, students and staff of other departments, be they library users or not; always desirous to render assistance when sought.

An expertise in the use of digital technology in teaching

 I am keeping abreast of the development for enhanced accessibility to information sources and growing knowledge bases as brought about by the integration of IT with the traditional library functions coupled with the global networking of computers.  I am therefore computer literate; conversant with various library software packages; and professionally skilful in the usage of ICT and digitisation of resources for services provision in medical libraries.  My professional training and with further acquisition of knowledge and hands-on skills in the application of the standard computer software packages such as the Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) in the course of the performance of my schedule.  The IT skills and my conversance with application of MS-PowerPoint have enabled me to assist teaching staff in preparation of their lectures and strengthened my capability for paper presentation to varying audiences whilst coping well with related and more complex tasks within automated library systems.  Thus, I am versatile in advanced reference work through the browsing of the available digitized resources and relevant databases via the internet.

Demonstrate skills in the area of forward planning and policy development

 Analytic in thought, objective in reasoning and with great attention to detail; hence with in-depth professional knowledge; makes best use of analyses derived from the statistics on patronage of the library services and its resources by users in budget planning and possible upgrading of facilities in the library.  By virtue of my headship responsibilities in previous learning resource centre and libraries where I have worked, I have taken charge of budget planning for the department, whilst also monitoring that funds were spent under appropriate vote heads and controlling any possibility of funds leakage or wastage of resources.  The deriving financial information, has adequately guided me to make far reaching decisions in planning for the future especially those bothering on stock performance, risk reduction in workplace, option appraisal, patronage/user satisfaction and impact assessments.  All of these and with the good support and encouragement received regularly from my line manager culminate in the pragmatic development of a Law Library in my workplace. .

G. Disposition

A good team player with a strong commitment to developing and co-operating with others.

 My precision in tasks’ performance, flexibilities and openness to diverse views enable me to work collaboratively and enjoying cooperation of others in a multi-professional team environment.  As much as possible and more often than not, we were able to achieve set targets and to deadlines too, in the overall interest of the parent organisation.

Having a strong sense of customer service the successful candidate will demonstrate a rapport with customers which supports them in their work

 Always concerned with user-centred library services delivery; hence creates this awareness in the staff that I work with and ensuring its achievement.  With capability for identification of the information needs of the users of my library through the application of the appropriate evaluative means.  The above qualities contribute immensely to my productivity for meeting up with users’ information needs satisfactorily in the library, towards complementing the goal of the parent organisation.


H. Circumstances

The role holder will be a member of the Learning Resources Academic Liaison Librarians team and will receive direct support from the Academic Liaison Manager and Deputy Director of Learning Resources and Student Services. The role holder will need to be flexible as whilst the post will primarily be office based there will be a requirement to travel regularly to other sites. It will be necessary to work in the evenings and at weekends to ensure the availability of cover for third leg activities

 I am highly flexible, able to work evenings and at weekends and also willing to travel to other sites as the situation arises. I have been used to working these patterns of schedules due to my previous liaison roles.


4. Conclusion:

By virtue of the highlighted responsibilities, I have had deep insights into the requirements - logistics, planning and implementation modalities - for the achievement of successful delivery of training programmes and have been highly resourceful in the proactive provision of balanced and up-to-date collections vis-à-vis delivery of reliable information services to support teaching, learning and research functions of the parent institution.

Finally, I am confident that my background, IT literacy and vast professional work experience in previous libraries serving faculties and leadership roles will put me at an advantage for effective performance of the stipulated tasks, if finally employed into the position under reference.
