Dr. Wenceslaus Rumanyika William Ballegu, a Tanzanian national born in 1958, is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) – TANZANIA. He is also the current Deputy Director of the Computer Centre at SUA (2006 – to date). He holds a PhD in Engineering (Food Process Engineering to be specific) He has a long teaching experience (since 1986) at SUA - TANZANIA, Makerere University – UGANDA (9 weeks) and Kigali Institute of Science, Technology and Management (KIST – RWANDA, 9 Weeks). He also offers one course for the Open University of Tanzania (distance learning - 2002 to date). His research interest falls in the areas of design, fabrication and testing the performance of simple farmer-friendly food processing machines (equipment), formulation and testing the acceptability of new food products based on locally available food ingredients, and improving (perfecting) traditional food processing operations with particular attention on the safety of the end products. He has extensive research experience having worked in a number of multidisciplinary, multi-institution and multinational research teams. He has served on two national organs; (i) as a Chairman of the Technical Committee on Food Packaging and Labelling of the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS: 1990 - 1996), and (ii) as a Member of the Food Technical Committee of the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA: 2005 to date).
