CH-103 Chemistry

Course requirement

  • The student undertaking the BSc. Program course should have studied chemistry till class XII.
  • The student has been introduced to thermodynamics at senior secondary level.
  • The topics covered at school level have been discussed under recapitulation
  • The students should revise these topics before the start of lecture.
  • The student will study all the topics mentioned in the following slides in 20 lectures of 55minutes duration each.

    • Concept of internal energy and enthalpy
    • Calculation of work (w), heat (q), change in internal energy(ΔE) and change in enthalpy(ΔH) for expansion and compression of ideal gases under isothermal and adiabatic conditions for both reversible and irreversible processes
    • Calculation of w, q, ΔE and ΔH for processes involving change in physical state
  3. Thermochemistry
    • Laws of thermochemistry
    • Internal energy and enthalpy changes for physical and chemical processes ( formation, neutralization, combustion, ionization, fusion and vaporization)
    • Standard state and standard enthalpy of formation
    • Integral and differential enthalpies of solution and dilution
    • Calculation of bond enthalpy, bond dissociation energy and resonance energy from thermochemical data
    • Kirchoff’s equation- variation of enthalpy of reaction with temperature
