We develop a collection of best practices and give them a try in the classroom.

Proposal 1: "Teacher-Student-Centered" teaching method

AfroPhysics-1.jpg

  • The teacher gives a short introduction to the subject.
  • The students take notes, try to understand, formulate their questions.

AfroPhysics-2.jpg

  • The students do exercises and solve problems on the subject. They ask questions to their fellow students and the teacher in order to get help. A high percentage of students gets active themselves.
  • The teacher observes the learning process, responds to questions and help requests, identifies needs for clarification.

AfroPhysics-3.jpg

  • Some students present their solutions at the blackboard.
  • The teacher gives help from the background and confirms the correctness of the presentations.

Now the process continues with A again

Today I used group work and the results were really amusing. More increased involvement Gp work1.jpg Gp work2.jpg --Vkizza 15:05, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Vincent, thanks for these most encouraging pictures! Group work: I think you did it the right way: Just try it and enjoy it. The students enjoy it anyway. I know of a maths teacher here in Munich that teaches all of her tuition in group work (a very extreme position, but possible. As soon as I find the time, I'll write an article about group work.--Günther Osswald 07:50, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
