The focusing questions of this topic are: What position did blacks hold in United States society in the mid-1950s and why were there moves to bring about change? How did blacks attempt to bring about change 1955–1965? What new directions were pursued in the 1960s?

The civil rights movement that took hold in the second half of the twentieth century reshaped the landscape of the United States. It gave rise to some of the most enduring leaders of the twentieth century and changed the course of modern America.
