Introduction to Psychology 1/IPSY102/Vision and other modalities/Overview

In this learning pathway we will explore how the perceptual process framework can be applied to understanding sensation and perception for vision, exploring a bit of detail for each step. As you make your way through this learning pathway make note of how similar the characteristics are for sensation and perception across the different modalities.

By the end of this learning pathway you should be able to:

• explain the electromagnetic spectrum and the visible spectrum
• describe how colour and brightness correspond to the different features of light waves
• identify the parts of the eye and explain the path that light takes through the eye and into the brain
• describe the functional and anatomical differences between rods and cones, and use that information to make predictions about perception
• recognize the hierarchy of processing simple features to complex objects in the brain
• identify specific examples of the Gestalt principles of perceptual organization
• apply the Perceptual Process to other modalities based on the example of vision
